Our Mission


The Ochsner STAR Program provides qualified high school students, particularly those with limited means and access, a cost-free opportunity to explore the world of healthcare. Through a rigorous, hands-on summer course focusing on science, technology, academics, and research, STAR aims to engage and inspire students to pursue further education and careers in science and medicine.


Program Dates: June 2nd- June 27th 

 

Program Details

STAR is a 4-week summer program, held Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm, which focuses primarily on scientific research, practical medicine, and leadership development. The knowledge and skills students acquire in this program will provide them with a solid foundation on which to build an advanced education and successful future in science, medicine, and other aspects of healthcare. In addition, STAR will provide students the opportunity to:

  • Conduct cutting-edge, inquiry-based scientific experiments under the guidance of Ochsner scientists in the setting of a dedicated student laboratory.
  • Acquire hands-on experience with sophisticated medical technologies.
  • Understand the connection between community service and healthcare 
  • Learn about the latest advancements in medicine and healthcare from Ochsner physicians, nurses, and administrators.
  • Develop professional and life skills, such as writing resumes, creating effective presentations, networking, and serving as a leader.
  • Participate in stimulating and informative programs, including stress management, CPR certification, and debates on current social issues impacted by science and medicine.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old by the start of the program.
  • Open to students advancing into 12th grade (graduating seniors are not eligible).
  • There is no minimum grade point average (GPA) or ACT/SAT score.
  • Students must be residents of and attend high school in the State of Louisiana.


The 2025 Program is scheduled to take place at Ochsner Medical Center – New Orleans, 1514 Jefferson Highway, New Orleans, LA 70121.  Under extreme circumstances, the STAR Administration Team is ready to pivot the summer program to virtual as needed.
